What song title best describes who you are?
I would have to go with "Blessed" by Rachael Lampa. It's also an amazing song!
How would you describe your style? Which stores do you usually inhabit?
My music style is Urban/R&B/Pop. My clothing style is Urban/R&B/Pop! Kidding. I tend to wear a lot of solid colors with interesting lines. Recently, I've been wearing a lot of purple, gray, and black. People joke, "It's nice to see that you're staying true to the Calista brand!"
What's more addicting: Myspace or Facebook? How many tweets do you write in a day?
Definitely Facebook! I'm an avid Facebook-er. With Twitter, I try to tweet once a day, but sometimes I forget! I'll be out, and it'll hit me, "I should tweet this!" I'm working on it.
What do you do more: texting or calling?
I text more than I call, but when I'm on the phone, I'll talk for a while, unless I'm in the middle of something.
Who's in your "Fav-5?"
I don't think I can pick only five. You have to give me 50.
What did your parents think when you told them you wanted a career in music?
They told me to make it a hobby haha. That was at first. But they saw how I couldn't escape the call on my life to make music, and since then, they've become very encouraging.
What languages do you speak? Do you have Chinese middle name? Ever tried singing in another language?
I speak English, Mandarin, and some Taiwanese. I can sing in Spanish! I remember we used to sing a bunch of songs in AP Spanish class, and I can still recall some of them. I can also sing in Mandarin.
What do you find yourself listening to when you're stuck in CA traffic?
It really depends on my mood! I love Adele, Far*East Movement, Hillsong United, Brooke Fraser, Lauryn Hill.
I love music, and I think it's a great ability when a musician is able to write their own songs. What's your secret to songwriting?
I think it's really important to get beyond the noise and figure out who you are and what you really want to say. It's about re-living a moment or an emotion and trying to capture that with the music and the lyrics. It's about the message and the purpose you're giving to the song. It's about focus and freedom at the same time.
With all your singing and music writing ability did you also include playing any instruments?
Yes, I started taking keyboard/piano lessons when I was three. I took violin lessons for a number of years. I have also learned how to play the clarinet, drums, and guitar. But most of the time, you'll only see me sing and play the piano for performances.
Where do you hope your singer and songwriting career will take you?
You know, when I get there, I'll tell you! Haha honestly, I just want to do something, express something, be something that hasn't been done before. I want to be able to find more within myself to share and to grow in my ability to share it. I want to be able to touch lives in a positive way.
What does music mean to you?
Music is a life force. It can change you. It can shape you. To create music is to create something that you're sending out into the world to do what you created it to do. Music is really a gift.
A trip down to L.A. has been long overdue. I love all the variety of food L.A. has to offer. Got any recommendations for a non-Californian.
Yes! You should check out the Asian food in Rowland Heights!
True or False: where you on UC Berkeley Dean's List? If so how many times did you make the list? Are there really that many Asian Pacific Americans at Cal?
True. I was a good student. Yes, there are a lot of Asian Pacific Americans at Cal, but Berkeley is just really diverse in general.
Which Wu-Tang Clan member is your favorite?
I'm sorry. I've heard of them, but I don't know who the group members are. Umm.. I'll pick the Wu?
Finish this sentence: if I wasn't making music I would be _________ and why.
If I weren't making music, I would be sad. Haha! Really though, if I weren't making music, I would probably be taking care of orphans in Africa and India because I love children and I miss my friends there.
Do you have a guilty pleasure your friends give you a hard time with?
Well, my friends all tease me about how often I go to Yogurtland. But it's SO GOOD!
If you were 1 album short of going platinum would you personally go out and buy the album to make the quota?
You know, I'd seriously consider it. But I figure, if it were already only one album short of going platinum, someone would probably buy that last album, right?
What are some perks to being a singer/songwriter?
I get to wake up every day knowing that I'm actively pursuing my dreams and doing what I was created to do.
Thanks for the personal knowledge about ya, anything special you like to say before we wrap?
I am so grateful for my friends and family, who encourage me to be who I really am. Any measure of goodness in me is due to the love of Jesus Christ and the transformation His love has created in me. And seriously, to my fans, I am honored to be sharing my music and life with you. Thank you!
