I feel less than a journalist—I never claimed to be a hard-nosed one anyway—because it’s the 2nd article I’ll be leading with Brook Lee. But as she was the first celebrity to arrive on the red carpet at Opening Night of the Korean Film Festival Los Angeles, it’s only fair. What can you say about one of the world’s most beautiful women? I am very impressed that she is consistently showing up at API events and that she uses her celebrity for causes such as when she appeared in the No on H8 campaign PSAs. If you viewed the year that she won the Miss Universe crown, you’ll know that she is part Korean as well as a bunch of other mixtures. And you know her famous answer “I would eat everything in the world. (You do not... [Read More]

I’ve been watching Grey’s Anatomy ever since it premiered as a mid-season replacement. But my fan excitement exponentially waned when McScreamy choked Christina and her decision to stay with him. Okay, PTSD and all that. Whatever. And while it gave Sandra Oh meatier scenes, it just seemed to continue the Madame Butterfly motif where the white man could degrade, demolish, and defile the Asian woman without jeopardizing her undying love for him. This season, Kim Raver has been added for a bizarre love triangle which is again similar to Puccini’s pukera. How would I feel if Teddy and not Christina committed suicide because of unrequited love? Not much better since it still will retain the sexist fantasy that a female’s existence revolves around a man. I... [Read More]

» In Relation to Banana |

Jan 02, 2010 - 11:50 PM - by KenChoy

In the midst of writing a romantic comedy screenplay while lying in bed, my mind caught onto a hook for the main love interest who’s suspicious of the other lead character’s ability to write his family story. Both of the characters are Asian, but the writer is called out for being white-washed that inhibits his relation to being Asian (yes, they are both male). He is accused for “doing it for the Man” and “seeking his approval.” It brought me (while I had a change of venue to the restroom [why is it that those are the best locales to write?] to think about some of the sentiments that were enunciated at Banana, a conference of API bloggers back in November.
Let me first state that any time APIs convene, any time APIs voice themselves, any time APIs rally together and attempt to... [Read More]
